Explaining my return to digital/35mm format. First off, I want to say that despite the convenience and reduced cost of shooting digital pictures, I still love film. I still like looking at slide film on a lightbox more than I like looking at pictures on the computer. But, I sure can do more with a digital camera. Crop sensors, non-full frame digital, means that I take the lens length in 35mm terms, and multiply it by 1.6. My 500mm lens (its a reflex mirror lens) is equivelent to a 800mm lens. Making shooting the moon a bit easier. Also, since the 500mm lens is cheap, it doesn't tell the camera that its a fixed f/8 aperature, but live view means I can judge exposure before hand, and I can use live view magnification to focus better. I also have free high iso shots. The moon was shot at ISO 400. The first shot of the stars was shot with a completely silly 12,800 ISO speed. The second was shot with ISO 200, 25 second long exposure. Just silly easy. Now I just need to get away from the city so I can see some serious stars. And the star shots, sorry I didn't use live view to focus, they're clearly out of focus. I'm over it. When I can get real good pictures of stars, I'll take the time to focus.
